- 3 years agoI don't need a saw for everyday use, but want one that runs when I need it. I use a saw for downed limbs, or taking down dead limbs, not for taking down trees. So far this saw is perfect for that, with lots of power, enough run time for the projects I have tried so far, and the ability to turn it on and off when needed - no idling a gas saw, no restarting a gas saw because it died while I moved something. I wasn't sure a battery powered saw would have the guts needed, but I have not been ... read more disappointed. Start up cost was helped by already having other tools using the charger, but I still think total startup cost for saw, battery and charger is worth it for the performance.
- 2 years agoBetter quality than the competitors - Stihl gets it rightThis is a surprisingly good chain saw. I just did not want to buy a saw that I would use occasionally for small trees and limbs and to have to deal with storing and mixing gas and all of the maintenance and start up required to keep the saw in order. Now, when I want to cut something, grab the saw, cut, and store the saw. The battery system seems very stable, The charger and extended battery work hand in hand to keep the battery ready to go, but not overcharge it. Pull the battery out of the ... read more charger, and pop it in the saw and you are running. If you need to transport the saw and battery without the charger, there is a back-out position of the battery so that it is in the saw's battery sleeve, but not making contact. There are some nice safety features that you would expect from Stihl - like the chain brake - which are very easy to engage/disengage and well thought out. I paid more for this than for competitive products, but like I said, Stihl just seems to get it right.
- 4 months agoHave two large Stihl gas saws. The smaller battery saw is perfect for trimming brush to fit into chipper. Use for storm clean up, trail clearing. No need to pack gas, chain oil tank on saw lasts a long time before refilling. Also, saw does not leak any chain oil! Never had any saw that doesn't leak chain oil. Amazing!
- 1 year agoI have had this saw for 6+ Months, in that time I have cut down and then cut up hundreds of trees mostly 10in or less. The runtime is good it's easy to use and fast charging I got the saw with 2 batteries so if one dies it's not a issue. I would recommend a battery powered chainsaw to anybody. You can cut stuff larger then 10 in however it uses the battery faster. If you need a saw get a battery powered one. I'd love to demo any new ones of these saws they just work so well.
- 1 year agothis battery powered chain saw is the easiest to use chain saw ever; I'll never go back to the 2-cylce saw, especially now that I'm retired. I have no hesitation to go out and cut a branch because the saw is so easy to pick up and to just 'go'. Battery charges fast.
- 1 month agoI currently own an MS250, a great saw. I purchased the MSA120 thinking it would be a good backup saw. I now use my MSA120 90% of the time, it is so handy and powerful enough to handle almost all of my jobs!
- 5 months agoI've owned a Stihl farm boss for many years and have always loved that saw. However, I wanted a light weight saw for trimming trees and other small projects around my property. I was planning on getting one of the lightweight gas saws when I saw this. It was more than I wanted to spend by the time you add in the battery and charger cost, but I couldn't be happier. I almost never fire up the boss anymore. I cut down and cut up multiple 8-10' diameter hardwood trees on a single charge. Not only is ... read more it quiet enough that you can use it in the wee hours without bugging the neighbors, but it's way more powerful than I expected. Also, the battery lasts longer than I do. Very happy with this product.
- 5 years agoNo fuel to mix, no two cycle engine to maintain. This battery operated chainsaw is in a category by itself…the only battery operated chainsaw that works like a real chainsaw. Do not waste your time with something cheaper. You will be tired before the battery runs low and it charges quickly. The battery also works with other Stihl products.
- 6 months agoI have several, chainsaws including a Stihl gas powered and Husquavarna gas powered saw. The gas powered saws are for consistent tree cutting and can’t be beat for clearing downed trees. However, for day to day use, the 160 saw is the one I reach for. So easy to use. It is also the first saw my wife has ever used despite numerous attempts to get her to use the other saws. I can toss it in the back of the truck or the tractor and don’t have to worry about a can of gas spilling over.
- 2 months agoLight weight, easy access under bushes/brush, operating time on battery is pretty good and can make quite a lot of cuts on a charge. Happy with unit in clearing off a acre plus of heavy/thick brush. It is on the pricey side for a small saw, in comparison to the much bigger/powerful gas powered saws. C.D. Zook
- 6 months agoI was very skeptical at first and then I used it. Like others have said, don't underestimate this saw. I can cut 3-4 small limbs before I can start a similar sized gas saw. Its small enough to keep behind the seat of my tractor. I'm mostly doing brush and small tree clearing and its perfect. Definitely recommend this saw.
- 5 months agoI bought the MSA 140 for my wife and she loves it! She can take care of everything herself. NO FUEL TO MIX! Just charge the battery. So far, she hasn't run out of battery. I mean she's not cutting a cord of wood. Although I love my gas big-boy Stihl, I have found myself using hers for trimming and for cutting smaller pieces of firewood to fit in our wood stove. A great purchase! We love it!
